Culture Corner: Canada Day

In Canada, July 1st is Canada Day.  It is a national holiday.  It celebrates Canadian confederation, which happened on July 1st, 1867.  It brought together an area called United Canadas, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick into a single dominion under the British Empire.  It was originally called Dominion Day, but the name changed in 1982 to Canada Day.  It's celebrated all across Canada and in many places you can see firework displays to celebrate Canada Day.  There are also parades, festivals and concerts.  Everywhere is different.

Idiom of the Month: This month's idiom and riddle relates to the summer season - The dog days of summer
"It's often too hot to go out during the dog days of summer."

Riddle of the month:
I dance on the shore, then slip away,
i leave gifts that sparkle by day.
Children chase me, but I'm shy,
Under the sun, I wave goodbye.
What am I?
For the answers, please ask Leo teacher!

Inside the classroom

This month we're having a look at Everybody Up 1, Unit #3.  In this unit we practice using numbers and we also practice using singular (単数) and plural nouns (複数名詞).  This can be confusing for many students, because it's not something that is naturally used in the Japanese language.  Luckily we only focus on regular nouns; those are nouns that become plural by adding "-s"  or "-es".

Let's look at the pictures below and practice!

今月はEverybody Up 1、ユニット3を取り上げます。このユニットでは、数字の使い方を練習するほか、単数名詞と複数名詞の使い方も練習します。これは日本語では自然に使われるものではないため、多くの生徒にとって混乱を招く可能性があります。幸い、ここでは「-s」または「-es」を追加することで複数形になる名詞である普通名詞のみに焦点を当てています。

Unlike previous months, this month I decided to link a news article from the BBC online.  The topic is one that really needs to be discussed more widely, and certain actions need to be taken.  I hope you find it as interesting as i did!
